A Few of Our Favorite Things

Publications:

Freaky Trigger

Launched at almost the same time as DAA, Tom Ewing's site has grown bigger and more diverse than our myopic little corner of the Web. Few of the contributors match the quality of Ewing's pithy, eccentric writings, and the overall tone can be a bit self-aware. Nonetheless, as far as do-it-yourself 'zines go, it has no peer.

The Village Voice

With Robert Christgau, Eric Wiesbard, Gary Giddins and plenty of other talent chiming in, the venerable Voice is still the gold standard in pop music criticism.

Perfect Sound Forever

Any publication that combines profiles of the Bats and Spring Hill Jack with an obituary for Milan Hlavsa, departed leader of the venerable Plastic People of the Universe (and that's just a fraction of one issue), deserves your patronage. Since 1993.

Greil Marcus' Real Life Top Ten

The simple description of "ten observations on pop and its discontents, from the noted critic and author" barely does justice to the wry, opinionated and passionate commentary on who fired the synapses in Marcus' brain over the previous fortnight, ranging from the mega-selling (Joan Osborne) to the mega-ignored (the Mekons). Updated at Salon.com whenever Marcus seems to feel like it.

RockCritics.com

Like 'em or hate 'em, they're all here – from Bangs to Reynolds (even our own Peter Gorman) – meticulously compiled by Webmaster Scott Woods.
