THE 5 ACTS IN A VH-1 ROCKUMENTARY: by Peter Gorman
The VH-1 one-hour documentaries about rock stars (called Rockumentaries) all follow the same
script. Whether the subject is the Doors, David Cassidy, Blondie, Metallica, the Mamas and the
Papas, Kiss, or any of a dozen others, the plot lines are interchangeable. Here are the five
acts in these rock and roll passion plays: Act 1 -- Innocence. They came from humble beginnings. Who knew that they would grow up to
change the world? Yet they had a dream, and they alone knew that someday they would live
it out. Act 2 -- Rejection. Why can't I be me? They needed to fulfill their own artistic vision, yet
audiences or managers wanted something else. "Do what everyone else is doing!" was
all they heard. And even if they were doing what everyone else was doing, they still managed
to do it in the wrong place. Yet they persisted. Act 3 -- Triumph. They stuck to their vision and were rewarded with fame, money, sometimes
critical adulation. They were on top of the world. Strangely, they found that success was not
all it was cracked up to be. And then all of a sudden ... Act 4 -- The Fall. They couldn't handle fame. Fate intervened. Somebody died. How could it
have turned out this way? They never saw it coming. (Editor's Note: More of Shakespeare's
rock star characters overdose in Act 4 than in any other.) Act 5 -- Rebirth. They turned their lives around. They are survivors. These are great days,
and they looking forward to the future. For those stars who kicked the bucket in Act 4, there
is a renewed interest in their music. They are being rediscovered. There is justice in the
world. It's not such a bad place after all. Artists l Essays l The List l Sites & Sounds New Issue l Best Of l Fave Links l About Us |
