FIVE SONGS OF HOPE AND LOVE BY RICHARD THOMPSON

by Peter Gorman

1. "A Heart Needs a Home" -- The song of someone who realizes that they can no longer go it alone. "I'm never going to run away," "the world's no place when you're on your own." Happiness is other people.

2. "Jet Plane in a Rocking Chair" -- A song about a lover's hope, with the planes still grounded, trying to run a mile in a wishing well, wondering if this time things will be different, if maybe this time he won't blow it. It's the moment before it all happens, before the attempt is made, and no matter how bad things have turned out in the past, maybe this time things will be different. There's still hope.

3. "Vincent Black Lightning" -- A song seemingly about a boy and his young love, though mostly it's a song about longing for the past, for a rare motor bike, for youth, for the 1950s. It's a song about a distant and better time, which is to say it's now a song about any day before Sept. 11, 2001.

4. "Beeswing" -- Thompson compares his thoughts of a youthful lover to that of a bee's wing, so delicate and beautiful, beautiful because it is delicate, and because it is delicate it slips away so easily.

5. "Just the Motion" -- "You're just feeling sea-sick, you're just feeling weak/ Your mind is confused and you can't seem to speak/ It's just the motion/Blown by a hundred winds, knocked down a hundred times, rescued and carried along/ Beaten and half-dead and gone/ And it's only the pain that's keeping you sane, and gives you the mind to travel on. O the Motion won't leave you, won&'t let you remain, don't worry/ It's a restless wind and a sleepless rain, don't worry/ Under the ocean, at the bottom of the sea, you can't hear the ocean it's as peaceful as can be/ It's just the motion."

Peace.
