Poi Dog Pondering

Natural Thing
(plate-tec-tonic)

Overreach can be a beautiful thing. Rarely, however, is it accompanied by slopped together product. But such seems the case with Natural Thing, the last CD release from the current incarnation of Poi Dog Pondering.

Frank Orrall and company provide us with a long-player filled with previously-released songs, albeit in different forms. Here, we find a live version of "Diva" and a cover of "Hard Sometime" (original versions from the excellent Electrique Plummagram), "Ta Bouche Est Tabou" (from Volo Volo), and covers of "Come Together" (by Primal Scream) and "That's the Way Love Is" (Ten City). In between are well-rendered but slightly adrift instrumentals that stretch beyond the eight-minute mark.

"Jealous" hits the target, and the all-French "Ta Bouche Est Tabou" is nice, I admit. I admire Orrall's singular vision, but please, his band hasn't c oughed up a true album for about five years. Natural Thing, sadly, fails to fill the void, a placeholder effort at most.
