June of 44

Anahata
(1/4 Stick)

June of 44 is one limb on an ever-growing tree whose roots are the semi-legendary Rodan. Members of that Louisville combo can be found in -- among other bands -- Retsin, Sonora Pine, Shipping News and Rachel's. With their label based in Chicago and their history in the "math rock" moment, June of 44's Anahata includes elements from these influences.

Math rock doesn't mean formulaic, but more along the meanderings and precision that the graph of a sine wave can comprise. Drums are the focus in the first few tracks which sound a bit like recent Shellac (yes, Albini is acknowledged in the liner notes), hypnotic repetition of cadence with subtle changes. The middle tracks, especially "Recorded Syntax" (the album's best) and "Southeast of Boston" are certainly under the influence of the Sea and Cake. Unfortunately, vocals by Fred Erskine and Sean Meadows aren't as mesmerizing as Sam Prekop or Archer Prewitt from that Chicago ensemble. I also take marks off for an overly long last track that started out well, but didn't need to run over ten minutes. Why is that such a trend nowadays?
