Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan Live 1966 - The Bootleg Series Vol.4
(Columbia)

For those who've owned some version of this artifact for decades, the improved sound quality is a gift, even if it doesn't approximate the giddy rush of discovery the young'ns will get from it. In its new sonic finery, the band sounds wilder and more unstoppable, Dylan's vocals more nuanced and cutting, and the proceedings in general more contentious and volatile than my 10th-generation bootleg suggested. It even has some reviewers gushing forth with "best live album ever" write-ups. And in that undistinguished category, it may take the prize. But it's also one of Bob Dylan's best albums, period.
